Small 27-meter inter island freighter Solfish 001 sank in the evening on May 23 2012 some 50 miles off its destination, Lata port, Solomon Islands, en route from capital Honiara. Vessel sank in heavy weather due to water ingress, caused by swell. 35 passengers and 14 crew went to life rafts, no emergency signal was issued probably due to the lack of emergency equipment. Vessel was declared missing the same day, Australian AMSA started search and rescue operation. Patrol plane Orion was critical in the operation, finding the survivors in the 6,000 square-kilometre (2,300 square-mile) search area, east-southeast of Honiara. Plane spotted first, debris, and some time later, rafts, then nearest vessel was directed to the rescue. In the late hours of May 26 freighter Micronesian Pride picked from rafts all 49 passengers and crew, after nearly 4 days ordeal in high seas. All were safe and well, passengers expressed warmest gratitude to the crew of the Solfish 001, and especially the master. Maritime Bulletin http://www.odin.tc
