Freighter ran straight onto rocks a Euboea
The "Anastasia" ran aground on rocky shallows on July 2, 2016, at 11.50 p.m. at the eastern coast of Stroggili Island close to the eastern tip of Euboea. The ship got stuck only two meters from the shore. The vessel which was sailing in ballast had departed from Psachna port, Euboea, at 7.30 a.m. and was bound for Psachna Evia upon Thessaloniki. It suffered a breach in hull when it ran straight onto the island's rocks. The crew of seven remained safe and sound. Due to the unknown amount of damage to the hull no salvage started until the hull was investigated by divers of the Greek Coastguard. The local pollution response plan of the Port Authority Edipsos was activated. The ship could be pulled off by the tug "Achilles" and two boats of the Coastguard in the afternoon of July 3. In the course of the preliminary investigations the56 year old master was arrested, but later released by prosecutors. At the same time,he was temporarily banned from leaving the ship.
