Crane boom collapsed onto ship's deck
A shore harbour mobile crane (HMC) collapsed onto the 'AMNSI Maximus' during cargo unloading at Paradip Port on Oct 8, 2024. The ship with 21 crew members on board and carrying nearly 21,000 tonne of cargo, had docked at the multipurpose berth of Paradip Port on Oct 7. A shipping services company deployed its HMC shore crane to unload the cargo, which included limestone and dolomit. During the unloading process, the crane’s rope snapped, causing its midsection to collapse on the vessel as the crane was attempting to lift cargo beyond its capacity. The crane’s lifting cylinder and parts of the ship were also damaged in the incident. The crew and stevedores escaped narrowly without any injury. Port and dock safety officials rushed to the mishap site to investigate the incident.
