Amina saved from sinking

Sat Dec 03 14:46:04 CET 2011 Timsen

Egypt's armed forces saved the "Amina" from sinking on Dec 3, 2011, and checks were undertanken to see if the ship could continue it's course towards Somalia after water was drained out of the vessel which had sent a mayday in the Red Sea. The ship wass now moving slowly to test its stability. It was to be towed to a port if a gash was found. The "Amina" was heading from Suez to Somalia when it got in danger of sinking with a crew of 14 56 kilometres off the southern coast of Safaga City. A helicopter was sent to the ship by the Cairo-based Search and Rescue Centre, affiliated to the armed forces.

AMINA 7702944

Mon Mar 28 21:31:55 CEST 2011 Timsen

From Mar 22-25, 2011, the Chinese warship "Maanshan" escorted the World Food Programme (WFP) vessel "Amina" from Berbera to Bosasso. After the meeting between COMEUNAVFOR and the Commander of the Chinese Force on board the Spanish Flagship "Canarias" on Feb 15, a daily exchange of information and coordination for escorting merchant vessels carrying WFP aid has been carried out. The results of this mutual understanding between the Chinese Forces and EUNAVFOR have resulted in the first historical WFP escort by a Chinese Naval warship. This is evidence of good coordination and co-operation with one of the many partners in the fight against piracy. After the arrival of the "Amina" in Bosasso, the WFP highlighted the high level of professionalism shown by the Chinese warship.
