River cruise ship stuck under bridge
On Nov 25, 2016, around 7 p.m. the "American Star" got stuck under the Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville during a turning manoever. She had sailed from St. Augustine at 11:38 a.m., traveling at an average speed of 9.2 knots, and arrived at the intersection of the St. Johns River and the Intracoastal about 4:45 p.m. The ship passed under the Main Street Bridge, which has a clearance 36.5 feet when it is lifted, but while the ship was trying to dock on the North Bank, the current caused it to drift back toward the bridge. A tug pulled the vessel out. The bridge was closed for several hours while the Florida Department of Transportation evaluated any damage from the collision, but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office cleared the bridge for traffic at 11.45 p.m. The Coast Guard was leading the investigation. The ship offers a “Great Rivers of Florida Cruise” which moves through Northeast Florida and St. John's River.
