Grounding off Fairport
The 'American Courage' ran aground on May 22, 2022, at around 1.10 p.m. UTC off the western breakwater in pos. 41° 47.04' N 081° 17.25' W off Fairport Harbor, Ohio, Lake Erie, while entering the port. The ship had sailed from Marblehead and was on its way to the Osborne Concrete and Stone in Fairport Harbor carrying a cargo of limestone when it became stuck. Two tugs were unsuccessful in moving the ship in the evening. A nearby ship, the 'Manitowoc', was brought to the area on May 23 and is now lightering some of the cargo from the 'American Courage' to make it easier to move. Coast Guard members are monitoring the operation and said at this time there were no injuries. The Coast Guard along with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources supervised an inspection of the freighter’s hull, and found no damage. On May 24 just after 4 a.m. the ship has been freed and was heading into Fairport Harbor with its own power.
