Livestock carrier with 15800 sheep on board capsized and sank

Mon Jun 13 22:00:43 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Al Badri 1' capsized and sank alongside a pier at Suakin Port, Sudan, in the evening of June 11, 2022, while about to leave the port. The ship with about 15,800 cattle on board came to rest on its starboard side on the bottom, remaining partially above the water. According to port officials, the ship was only licensed to transport 9,000 sheep and sank after thousands more animals were brought on board. Almost all sheep drowned, about 700 could be rescued over the ship's side. The animals were destined for slaughter and should have been shipped to Saudi Arabia. The damage of the accident is estimated to be around 3.8 million Euros.
