Stranded sailors repatriated
Nine of the remaining Pakistani sailors, who had been stranded on the "Akkaz" in the Suez Canal, returned home on Feb 3, 2017. The sailors arrived at Jinnah International Airport in the early hours of the morning. The Sindh government had not provided them with any support. The ship’s captain was not able to return with the crew though, as he had been admitted to a hospital with his lengthy stay aboard the ship having resulted in his health deteriorating. He was expected to reach Pakistan in the next four to five days,. A total of 17 Pakistani sailors were stranded onboard the ship which had been anchored on the Suez Canal after Egyptian authorities confiscated the vessel for non-payment of dues. The ship, owned by a Kuwaiti company and chartered by a Dutch firm, had set sail from Abu Dhabi on Aug 11, 2016, bound for Port Said and Alexandria from where it was supposed to sail onwards to the Netherlands. Upon reaching Egyptian waters in October, the vessel had not been allowed entry due to a mechanical failure and the expiry of its technical license. The stranded sailors, according to the vessel’s Chief Officer Jameel Jangian, were owed around Rs 20 million in dues by the shipping corporation. Stranded Pakistani crew repatriated
Four Pakistani sailors stranded onboard the "Akkaz" near the port of Suez will be returning home on Jan 5, 2017. The Pakistani Embassy has completed preparations for repatriation of Mohammed Umer Ghauri, Tanveer, Mohammed Tariq and Samiullah. They will be returning home empty handed, as the Kuwaiti company has not cleared their dues pending for the last five months. Three out of the four sailors are said to be severely unwell. A total of 17 Pakistani sailors were stranded onboard the vessel which was anchored in the Suez Canal after the Egyptian government confiscated the vessel for non-payment of dues. The "Akkaz", owned by a Kuwaiti company and chartered by a Dutch company, had set sail from Abu Dhabi on Aug 11, 2016 bound for Port Said and Alexandria in Egypt and then onwards to the Netherlands. Upon reaching the Suez waters in October the vessel was not allowed to enter due to mechanical failure and expiry of its technical license. The stranded sailors according to the vessel’s Chief Officer Jameel Jangian are owed approximately Rs. 20 million by the shipping corporation in dues.
Pakistan Embassy in Cairo extending support to stranded Pakistani sailors
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Embassy in Cairo is extending full support to the Pakistani sailors stranded onboard a Kuwaiti cargo ship near the port of Suez, the Foreign Office said on Tuesday. According to Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria, 18 Pakistani sailors, including the captain of the ship, have been stranded onboard MV AKKAZ in the Red Sea near the port of Suez as the Egyptian government has been in custody of the ship since four months.
