AETEA SIERRA 8200498
Three of the 12 Filipino seafarers detained for over eight months aboard the “Aetea Sierra” arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on Mar 23, 2010, bringing with them hopes not only for the payment of their back wages, but also for the speedy repatriation of their compatriots being in Greece since July 2009. The “Aetea Sierra” was impounded in the Piraeus Port in September 2009 when a case was filed against its owners by the ship charterers for its alleged failure to unload the cargo at the agreed port. The seafarers scored victory in December last year after a Greek court ruled that the ship’s crew, which also included Ukrainian and Montenegrin nationals, should get higher back wages to cover the period of July 9 to November 9 of last year, and residual claims until their actual departure from Greece. They have already been paid their salaries for the initial four months that they were stranded, but they are still awaiting claims equivalent to roughly four months’ salary.
