AEGEAN GLORY 7712121

Thu Jul 08 10:47:11 CEST 2010 Timsen

The “Aegean Glory” finally sailed out of Netaji Subhas Dock of Kolkata early on July 8, 2010. The captain and crew have been given a clean chit by Indian authorities but action may still be taken against the Mumbai-based shipping agency that was in charge of the vessel, said officials. According to the customs it seems that the captain was not aware that he would have to enter the Kolkata Dock System with his vessel and did not bother to declare the cargo on board. The ship was to anchor at Diamond Harbour on June 25 to unload some cargo for Nepal. It was soon realised that the ship would not be able to unload its cargo at the Diamond Harbour anchorage, as it did not have any gear in the form of cranes or grabs. Trouble started when a decision was taken to bring the ship to Kolkata for unloading. Port officials were taken aback when the captain declared that he was carrying "military cargo" and his next port of call was to be Karachi.

After the mystery surrounding the “Aegean Glory”, intercepted on the Hooghly with arms and ammunition used by multi-national troops in a United Nations peacekeeping mission, was resolved on June 27, with the UN authorities confirming the consignment, the vessel would now set sail for Karachi after unloading here the cargo meant for the Nepal Army. The customs officials received a communication from the New York-based Movement Control officials of the UN Mission confirming the consignment that included rocket launchers, smoke bombs and anti-aircraft guns, apart from other sophisticated arms and ammunition. Following the letter, it has been decided not to carry out any search operation in the vessel.
