Crane crash shakes Adelina
Cargo Handling Company (CHC) suffered another embarrassment last week when a large backhoe digger was dropped on to the deck of a cargo ship at the Mauritian port. CHC is still reeling from revelations about cargo thefts taking place next to its offices at Port Louis harbour. The accident occurred as Malta-flag geared bulker Adelina, owned by Alloceans Shipping, was unloading maize and soya at Terminal 1 on 2 April. To help clear cargo from the holds, the Hyundai crawler excavator was lifted from the quay to be placed on the main deck. According to Le Défi newspaper, the 15t excavator was lifted by cables with a safe working load of only 7 tonnes.
