Fire under control
on Dec 1, 2011, at 8.30 a.m. a fire broke out on in the accomodation block of the "Abu Rdees" on the outer Elbe near buoys 13/14 being in ballast enroute Klaipeda-Bremen. On board the freighter crew is 37 men. The lifeboats "Hermann Helms" from Cuxhaven overheard the distress call and immediately rushed to the disabled vessel. In addition, a team of six specially-trained firefighters and an ambulance from Cuxhaven have been taken on board. At Neuwerk roadstead the freighter was moored. From the station Helgoland also the lifeboat "Hermann Helms" proceeded. The crew meanwhile managed to bring the fire under control. Five crew members were suspected to ahve suffered smoke inhalation. The lifeboat "Hermann Marwede" took them to Cuxhaven where they were met by an ambulance. Meanwhile the firemen boarded the "Abu Rdees" to check that the fire is actually deleted. On scene were southwesterly winds of five Beaufort and about one meter wave height.
