Malfunction thought to have caused collision

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will be in South East Bight to investigate the collision of the "Norcon Oceanus" with two boats and two floating docks on May 5 afternoon. One longliner had suffered extensive damage iun the collision. It was believed a malfunction on the vessel was likely the cause of the accident. The ferry has resumed its duties and is currently docked in the South East Bight community.

On May 6, 2013, Transport Canada officials were expected in South East Bight after the "Norcon Oceanus" servicing the community collided with other vessels. Representatives of Norcon Marine Services , Department officials from the Burry Group in Clarenville, owners of the vessel, and the local Harbour Authority also proceeded to survey the damage. The ship which was originally owned by Norcon Marine Services and operated as an offshore supply vessel, has been chartered to the Department of Transportation and Works and may carry about a dozen passengers. It arrived in the community on May 4 after having been refitted in Clarenville, and had returned on a second trip on May 5 when it collided with two local boats and three floating docks.
