Port of St. Helens adopts new name — Port of Columbia County — and new logo

The Port of St. Helens adopted a new name “Port of Columbia County” on July. At its Sept. 12 meeting, the commissioners adopted a new logo reflecting the name change. Last April, the Port of St. Helens set out to rebrand itself to reflect its mission and operations across all of Columbia County. In July, the commissioners of the port district formally adopted a new name, “Port of Columbia County.” The name, currently “Port of St. Helens,” is not indicative of the port operations that stretch from Clatskanie and Port Westward to Scappoose along the Columbia River. At its Sept. 12 meeting, the commissioners adopted a new logo reflecting the name change. It is the next step in a process that will culminate with a total rebranding of the port by year’s end.

Video: Sternwheeler crashes into pirate ship on Columbia River

A sternwheeler crashed into a pirate ship on the Columbia River Friday in front of hundreds of people while attempting to pull up near a dock for the Maritime Heritage Festival in St. Helens. Fortunately, no one was hurt despite a majority of the crew still being on board both boats. Witnesses say the current was stronger than usual on the Columbia, and that likely played a role in what happened. At one point the captain of the sternwheeler realized the boat was coming into the dock too strong and tried to reverse, but it was too late, according to witnesses. "The dock even kind of shook, it was crazy," said witness Brent Violette.
