Arkona offshore wind farm switched on in the Baltic Sea

Wed Apr 17 16:52:34 CEST 2019 arnekiel

The Arkona offshore wind farm has been officially opened by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. ‘Arkona is an iconic project for future generations - built today!’ The opening ceremony was held in Sassnitz, Germany, on board one of Van Oord’s installation vessels, the company said in its release. E.ON awarded Van Oord the contract for the transport and installation of the 60 monopiles and transition pieces in 2016. Heavy-lift installation vessel Svanen completed these works safely, on time and to the full satisfaction of the client in 2018. The 385 megawatts wind farm is located in the Baltic Sea, about 35 kilometres north of Rügen Island, Germany. The offshore wind farm provides 400,000 homes with sustainable energy and displace approximately 1.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. This reduction fits to the goals set by the German government to reduce CO2 emissions in 2020 with 40% compared to 1990.

Passenger vessel suffered water ingress in Baabe

Fri May 13 10:15:28 CEST 2016 Timsen

The German passenger m/v "Lamara", 139 gt (IMO: 8136051), suffered water ingress in the late afternoon of May 12, 2016, and was threatened to sink at its berth in Baabe upon Sassnitz island. The volunteer fire brigades Baabe, Bergen, Göhren, Sassnitz, Breege and Schaprode, the fire rescue Stralsund, teams of the Technical Support Work THW in Stralsund and Bergen as well as the relevant authorities in Mönchgut-Granitz were alerted. An oil spill could be averted by the use of absorbents and other oil recovery means. About 30 cubic meters oil contaminated water were pumped out of the hull, before a leak of 2-3 centimeters could be found in the engine room and was patched then. Ten hours after the alert the forces could be stood down. The police inspection Sassnitz launched an investigation, and the ship was detained until the seaworthyness has been restored. Port of Sassnitz and Ust-Luga join hands to create a logistics hub

Fri Jun 26 09:07:42 CEST 2015 arnekiel

As Portnews reports, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a federated state in northern Germany and Leningrad region are set to create a logistics center in the port of Sassnitz-Mukran to boost cargo throughput at the port of Ust-Luga. Alexander Drozdenko Acting Governor of Leningrad region and Erwin Sellering Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern confirmed the intent at a meeting on June 25, 2015 in the framework of the Days of German Economy, the regional government press office said. A delegation of 75 representatives of German business led by Mr. Erwin Sellering visited the port of Ust-Luga facilities, terminals, a train / ro-ro ferry complex.Alexander Drozdenko noted that the ferry complex capacity was projected at 5.5 million tonnes. However, in 2014 only 1.6 million tonnes of freight were shipped through the facility, carried largely by rail transport. "Actually, the ferry line is ready to operate at its full capacity, but the lack of logistical connections between the Russian and German business is a constraint. We need to move from the technical part of the project to the economic part and we fully support the proposal of the Minister-President to build a large logistics complex in Sassnitz-Mukran. Today we have taken a step in this direction that will ensure further economic breakthrough" Alexander Drozdenko was quoted by the press service as saying. In his turn, Erwin Sellering suggested that German / Russian railways be operators of the future logistics hub that are capable of investing not only in the construction of railways and marshalling yards, but also in logistics facilities. The Baltic Ferry project, a train / ro-ro ferry line Ust-Luga - Baltiysk- Sassnitz (Germany), is a project of federal significance in the transport / port development sector, one of the key parts of the East-West international transport corridor.
