3 fishermen injured in collision
Three fishermen were injured when their boat collided with a merchant vessel and sank off the coast of Beypore near Kozhikode on Wednesday afternoon. The fishermen were rescued by another boat in the vicinity. They were later transferred to a state coastal police boat, which brought them ashore. The trio, Rafeeq, Munees and Rafi of Chaliyam, has been admitted to a hospital in Kozhikode with minor injuries. The identity of the merchant vessel was not immediately known. Indian Coast Guard has deployed a Dornier aircraft and two fast-patrol vessels in the area to check the veracity of reports and also to locate the merchant vessel suspected to be involved in the incident. The fishermen claimed to have seen 'NYK' inscribed on the vessel, port officer Abraham V Kuriakose said. He said he had communicated this information to the Navy and Coast Guard. Officials of the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai said they were trying to verify if any of the vessels of the Japanese firm, NYK Line, was in Kozhikode area around the time when the incident had occurred around 3.30pm. However, there was lack of clarity regarding the location where the incident had occurred. While the fishermen said the boat crashed around 13 nautical miles off the coast, a defence ministry release, quoting preliminary reports, said it had taken place 18 nautical miles off the coast. According to the coastal police officials, the fishermen had jumped into the sea on seeing the ship approaching towards their boat. The fishermen expected the ship to avoid the boat did not bother to move their vessel.
