Barge pushed by Zeus aground on Mississippi

The U.S. Coast Guard was overseeing salvage operations of 4,800 tons of anhydrous ammonia from the "Barge 20851" on the Mississippi River that ran aground on Sep 3, 2016 near Campbell’s Island, East Moline. The "Zeus" was heading south was pushing two barges when the incident occurred. The Coast Guard freed one of the barges, but the others remained grounded at Mile Marker 491, about 1,000 yards off Campbell's Island. The Kirby Inland Marine will transfer the ammonia from "Barge 20851", if necessary, to ensure the vessel can safely be refloated. Locks and Dam 14 and 15 will be closed to traffic during operations. The Coast Guard asked the public to stay away from the area. The barge, which was not leaking, was outside the Mississippi's navigable channel and not impeding river traffic. On Sep 12 Coast Guard personnel planned to oversee salvage operations of the barge carrying 2,400 tons of anhydrous ammonia. Locks 14 and 15 will be closed for traffic during operations. If ammonia was smelled, people are told to immediately go indoors, turn off the air-conditioning and call 911.
