Ship lost cargo in grounding incident
After the 'Zapadnyy' leaked some of its cargo of molasses into the harbour of Silloth on Feb 10, concerns had been raised over the impact of the spillage on local wildlife. The Associated British Ports it was monitoring the area, but believed that the cargo was all discharged within the port, an area of approximately 100,000 tonnes of water, and not expecting any significant environmental impact. The ongoing monitoring of surrounding areas is being carried out at low water each day to monitor any residue effects or impacts on the local habitat waters. Communication error likely to blame for grounding
The cause why the "Zapadnyy" ran aground on a sandbank at the entrance to Silloth harbour was likely a communication error. Also the sandbanks change quite frequently with the tide so it can be quite tricky getting into the port. The ship unloaded its cargo of molasse after it was refloated at about 10:30 p.m. on Sep during high tide. The ship was stuck very close to the rocks but luckily it didn't move any further. After the ship's cargo was unloaded it headed to Klaipeda, ETA Sep 21. Report with photos: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cumbria-37360854
