Tug on fire in Soldiers Bay
Emergency services were alerted after a fire broke out aboard the 'York Syme' in Auckland's Waitematā Harbour. The tug was about 500 metres from shore at Soldiers Bay on the North Shore on Feb 5, 2020, about 2.55 p.m. No one was aboard the vessel which had been moored there for some time. Two crews of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Birkenhead station went out, supported by a Coatguard boat and the police. A fire crew from Parnell boarded the vessel and used specialist equipment to bring the fire under control just after 4 p.m. Reports with photos: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/119327350/boat-on-fire-at-soldiers-bay-on-aucklands-north-shore https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12306565 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12306608
Tug high and dry on Weiti River
The "York Syme" ran aground on the Weiti River just upriver from the Stillwater Boat Club on March 16, 2017, at 11. a.m. Due to unsuitable tides she won't be able to refloat until March 30. The high tide the day the boat stranded was 3,2 metres and then began dropping to below 3 meters. On March 30 will be the next 3,5 metre high tide. The "York Syme" had been undergoing maintenance at Stevensons yard further up the river and was heading back to Bayswater Marina. There were no issues over the stranding from Auckland Transport's perspective. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission investigated an incident when the vessel ran aground in the Gulf on Nov 13, 1997.
