Injured fisherman removed from board in Neeltje Jans
The emergency services were deployed on the early morning of Oct 30, 2024, to rescue an injured person from the 'Noordland - Yee 118' in Neeltje Jans. He was trapped between a mooring post and the ship when berthing in the port. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening. The vessel was moored at a quay at the Fael Way in Vrouwenpolder. The ambulance service was alerted around 5:45 a.m., and ten minutes later the Kamperland fire brigade and the police were also called in for assistance. The victim had fractured his elbow and sustained a serious wound, He was taken off the ship one hour after the alert in a sitting position using the loading ramp of a truck and the on-board crane. He was then taken to the hospital in Middelburg by ambulance. Maaskant Shipyards delivers innovative shellfish dredger
The Dutch fishing cooperative YE 118 Noordland BV has taken delivery of its new shellfish dredger from Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam. While the vessel shares the same hull design as other fishing vessels built previously at the yard, it is the ground-breaking techniques used in the product harvesting and handling methods that set her apart, the Dutch shipbuilding group said. There are a number of challenges facing the razor shell fishing sector – perhaps the most pertinent is being able to harvest an undamaged product. This is due to the fact that razor shells are fragile and thus easily broken. Once on board, the next task is to keep the catch alive and healthy as razor shells are a particularly sensitive species.
