Tanker rescued 73 migrants
In the early morning of Jan 20, 2024 the Port Authority of Agia Galini was informed about the rescue of 73 migrants, among them 67 adults and six minors, on board an iron boat of about 15 meters length, by the 'Yannis P', en route from Ust-Luga to Sikka, 38 nautical miles southwest of the Gavdos. The tanker sailed to the bay of Kala Limeni, where it disembarked the castaaways who were transferred to the port of Heraklion with the assistance of the Municipality of Phaistos. The Central Port Authority of Heraklion, which was conducting the preliminary investigation, arrested two people, aged 17 and 33, as human traffickers. The migrants had paid 3,200-5,000 dollars for their transfer.
