Cargo ship blacklisted by USA for violating sanctions imposed upon North Korea

Fri Jan 05 19:28:40 CET 2018 Timsen

The USA have placed the "Xin Sheng Hai" on proposed a UN blacklist. The ship has been listed among 10 vessels, which the US wants the United Nations Security Council (the 1718 Sanctions Committee) to blacklist, due to allegations that they have violated sanctions imposed upon North Korea. The ship’s last location was tagged as the Yellow Sea area, near the north-eastern tip of China, near North Korea. She was one of 10 vessels accused to have been conducting ship-to-ship transfers of refined petroleum products to North Korean vessels or transporting North Korean coal in violation of UN sanctions, imposed over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs. The ship was registered in South Korea until the first half of 2017, but since a Chinese shipping company bought it in June, it has been flying the flag of Belize. These ships regularly enter South Korean ports after changing their flags, especially Yeosu port, which is a hub for oil tankers. In October 2017, the 1718 Sanctions Committee blacklisted 4 ships for carrying coal to North Korea. When it met on Dec 22, it listed four of the 10 proposed by the US. China reportedly vetoed the listing of the rest.
