A container ship's steering system was not properly tested before an apparent malfunction caused it to run aground in Moreton Bay, an investigation has found. The Liberian-registered MSC Basel ran aground on Yule Banks as it left Brisbane on November 1 last year. When the crew realised the steering system was not working properly they deployed the anchor and changed the engine thrust but it was too late to prevent the grounding. The ship suffered only minor damage and there was no breach of the hull. Read more: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/grounded-ships-steering-not-checked-20110504-1e7uj.html#ixzz1LMJQP58U

Tue Nov 02 09:03:27 CET 2010 Timsen

Tme "MSC Basel" is being detained until it is inspected for damage and judged seaworthy after it struck a sandbank five kilometres southwest of Comboyuro Point on Moreton Island about 9.30am (AEST) Nov 1 due to rudder failure. It remains under a detention order while a structural survey and incident investigations are completed. Ispectors have gone aboard to inspect the vessel and assess its structural integrity. An underwater hull inspection is scheduled for Nov 3, 2010. There haven't been any indications of pollution from the vessel.
