Motor yacht total loss after collision with Xanthos
The motor yacht that was crushed by the "Xanthos" in the afternoon of Sep 24 in Breukelen can be considered as a total loss according to the owner of the shipyard in the Vecht region where the boat was lifted out. The hull had deep butts and is deformed. The floor was standing upright inside. The construction has also been heavily damaged. The collision almost certainly means the end for the boat that was long-term in the family. The three crew members were barely able to get to the shore when the "Xanthos" sailed towards them. Eventually they were able to return to Amsterdam by boat. The police was still investigating the cause of the incident. A video recording of the incident showed that the barge was sailing an abnormal course. Even without the motor yacht, the "Xanthos" missed the fairway which could have been the result of strong winds. The wheelhouse, which is adjustable in height to give the skipper a better view, was not raised. during the canal transit. A skipper, however, must be able to survey the water at least 350 meters ahead of the vessel. Cameras could allow the skipper to see what is happening at a shorter distance for his ship. The captain of the container ship was not yet available for a response. Dutch report with photo: https://www.ad.nl/utrecht/geplet-plezierjachtje-total-loss-na-aanvaring~a035c859/
Barge crushed motor yacht
On Sep 24, 2018, a pleasure yacht was crushed by the "Xanthos" (ENI-No.: 02324571), on the Amsterdam-Rhine-Canal near Breukelen. The captain of the container barge which had sailed from Amsterdam at 2.30 p.m. totally misjudged the slight bend in the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at Breukelen where the yacht was floating. Three boys were walking on the shore in panic who had obviously jumped off their boat when they noticed that the big ship was coming straight for them. The screams of the boys had an effect. At one point the captain of the container ship apparently knew what was going on and threw the helm thus avoiding a frontal collision. The ship headed back to the middle of the canal and went off. The boat could be secured to the shore and left after about an hour towards Loenen. The bow on the starboard side has been badly damaged. The wooden structure was broken and the floor was also warped. The container ship has sailed to Duisburg. As soon as the skipper is back, he will be interrogated what exactly happened. Rijkswaterstaat reported that during an investigation by a patrol boat there was no damage found on the shore of the canal. The quay remained intact.
