Fisherman fell over board in fog and was saved
The 21-year-old fisherman Riekelt from Hippolytushoef fell overboard from the "Grietje - WR 189" in the Northsea on May 29, 2018, at 2.15 a.m. He stood guard while fishing, but stumbled. He managed to hold on to a wire of the ship for a while, but had to let go after a while. For three hours he kept his head above water in the cold North Sea. All surrounding ships, a helicopter and lifeboats were searching for him in dense fog with a visibility of 50 meters. He finally was discovered by one of his best friends: the fisherman Kees from Den Oever, who heard him shouting in the water 90 miles northwest of Den Helder and pulled him on board. The lifeboat "Joke Dijkstra" reached the vessel after 2,5 hours and took over the bypothermic man. Because of the fog, a helicopter could not take off from a drilling platform. The "Joke Dijkstra" then sailed in the direction of Den Helder to get out of the fog area as quickly as possible. Then the helicopter could pick up the man and take him to the hospital. At 8.15 a.m. the lifeboat was back in Den Helder. Dutch report with photo: https://www.knrm.nl/nieuws/knrm-reddingstation-den-helder/overboord-geslagen-visserman-gered
