The ship reportedly sustained damage and was set on fire. It was limping towards Sevastopol. She built for the Russian Navy by Severnaya Verf Shipyard in St. Petersburg as the second of three Logistics Support Vessels in the Elbrus-class/Project 23120, designed for a range of operations including dry cargo transport, towing, fleet escort, and salvage and rescue. The vessel also features an ice-strengthened hull. The attack follows the sinking of the 'Moskva', the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. Russia’s defense ministry eventually confirmed multiple casualties from that incident.

The logistics support vessel (LSV) of Project 23120 "Elbrus" returned to Severnaya Verf Shipyard (part of USC) from initial builder's and state sea trials in the Baltic Sea. According to its results, the ship will be prepared for the transition to the northern latitudes for further acceptance trials, the shipbuilding company said in press release. The shipbuilders have complied with several points of customer's requirements during the acceptance tests. In particular, the customer's representatives accepted the magnetic compass operation, which means completion of the "Navigation" segment trials.
