Fri Oct 04 18:35:26 CEST 2024 Timsen

On Oct 4, 2024, a passenger had to be medevaced from the “Volcán de Timanfaya”, when the ship, which temporarily was covering the Málaga-Melilla route of the Armas Trasmediterránea Group, was 23 nautical miles west of Alborán. At 02:43 a.m. the ship's notification was received by Salvamento Marítimo, and the CCS Almería mobilized the Helimer 205 SAR helicopter, which proceeded to evacuate him and transferred him to the airport of the capital of Almería.

Ferry saved two distressed fishermen

Mon Sep 08 21:04:23 CEST 2014 Timsen

On Sep 6, 2014, the "Volcan de Timanfaya" enroute from Gran Canaria to Fuerteventura was asked to assist after a distress signal had been detected 4,5 nautical miles from the ferry position. The ferry crew traced the 8,5 meter long fishing boat "El Calafu" drifting bottom up with a life raft connected to it. Inside were two young men who were rescued under complicated circumstances in rough seas. The ferry manoevered as close as possible as oit seemed too dangerous to launch an own boat. Then the castaways swam the remaining 100 meters towards the ship and were taken aboard with a ladder. Then the ferry continued to Moro Jable. The rescued were the diver Rayco García (29) from Castillo del Romeral and Jonathan Fernández (27) who had been fishing squids in the night. On the return trip to port the "El Calafu" was hit by two large waves, became flooded and capsized around 3 a.m. The fishermen managed to dive into the boat and activate the emergency beacon 1,5 hours later. After eight hours in the raft, the ferry approached them.

Ferry saved capsized fishermen

Tue Aug 26 10:22:02 CEST 2014 Timsen

On Aug 24, 2014, at 2 a.m. the 8,5-m-f/v "El Calafu" capsized after having left the port of Melenara on Gran Canaria and drifted bottom up eight miles off Melenara in rough seas. The crew of two had saved themselves onto the keel without having had a chance to activate the EPIRB. Only at 7,19 a.m. they managed to activate a locator the signal of which was received at the Estación Espacial in Maspalomas. An SAR operation was launched involving the lifeboat "Nunki" and a helicopter. First on scene was the "Volcán de Timanfaya" which was underway from Las Palmas to Morro Jable. They traced the castaways, and captain Jamil Jabur stopped the ferry around 200 meters off the wreck. The two fishermen Rayco Garcia and Jonathan Fernández jumped into the sea and climbed aboard. Both returned to Gran Canaria in good health in the afternoon of Aug 25.
