The “Volcán de Tauce” suffered an engine a breakdown in the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma on Nov 10, 2024. It was supposed to leave at 11:45 a.m. and finally sailed at 2 p.m. from the port of Los Cristianos almost three hours late, en route to La Palma, The Armas Trasmediterránea Group plans to replace the ship from Jan 1, 2025 with the catamaran “Volcán de Tirajana”.

Inspection detects 3,935 illegal overtime hours in three months

Tue Nov 07 10:53:28 CET 2023 Timsen

An inspection of the 'Volcán de Tauce' detected 3,935 illegal overtime hours in three months. The maximum allowed overtime hours is 80 per worker per year, but on the ship cases of up to 276 have been recorded from June to August 2023 alone. The ship that currently covers the route from Algeciras to Tangier was the subject of a work inspection in August. The report issued, provided by the union section of Workers' Commissions in the company, was devastating. The Labour Inspection has initiated a disciplinary procedure against Naviera Armas for an overwhelming abuse of overtime. The legal maximum allowed overtime hours per worker per year according to applicable legislation - as stated in the report - is 80 hours. However, the inspection carried out with the schedules from June to August - that is, only a quarter of the year - has detected that 46 workers have worked, in total, 7,615 overtime hours over their 40-hour weekly workday. If the sum of the aforementioned 80 hours of all these workers is deducted from the figure of 7,615 - that is, if what the law establishes as a maximum is removed -, there remains a remainder of 3,935 illegal overtime hours that Naviera Armas has used for its employees only in that period. This makes an approximate figure of 164 days that these 46 workers together have worked overtime, without any legal protection. This count includeed all positions within the ship, including captains. Of the four who rotate to direct the ship, one worked 230 overtime hours (150 over the annual limit), another 169 (89 overtime), the third 260 overtime hours (180 over) and the fourth 111 (31 over). the limit).
