World’s largest rail/motor ferry Vilnius Seaways starts operation from Iljichevsk
Iljichevsk (Ukraine) hosted the presentation of M/V Vilnius Seaways, world’s largest rail/motor ferry. From July 2013, it commenced regular service at Iljichevsk – Poti (Georgia) ferry line, says Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk. The new line integrates the lines of the Baltic and Black Seas into a single transport-logistic chain. The ferry Vilnius Seaways was handed over to Ukrferry by the Danish company DFDS Seaways. It is the second vessel to work on a line linking Ukraine and Georgia. The first ferry, M/V Greifswald is now services Iljichevsk – Batumi line (once a week) while M/V Vilnius Seaways operates at Iljichevsk – Poti line (also once a week).
Man imprisoned on ferry because of human trafficking and sexual exploitation
Federal police have arrested a passenger of the "Victoria Seaways" during a control in the East Shore Port in Kiel on Sep 11, 2012. The 44-year-old man from Latvia had been sentenced to eight years for human smuggling and sexual exploitation to several years in prison. He had spent a part of the punishment in custody, then the man was deported to Latvia. For the case of a return to Germany an enforcement warrant against him was issued. After he had again illegally come from Klaipeda to Kiel, the federal police in Kiel demanded the arrest warrant and took him straight to prison in Kiel where he now has to serve the remaining sentence of 209 days.
Another replacement ferry
Engine repairs of the "Vilnius Seaways" in Klaipeda are continuing, forcing DFDS to insert another ship in the Kiel-Ust-Luga traffic as the service of the "Elisabeth Russ" ended. Starting on July 3, 2012, the "Ahtela" will replace the "Vilnius Saeways" which is due to return on July 17.
