Fire in engine room

On May 31, 2015, at 2.20 p.m. the "Vestfonn" suffered a fire on board around 110 miles west of Mumbai in the Arabian Sea. It started in engine room and as it spreaded further, the crew requested an evacuation. The Indian Coast Guard immediately diverted its aircraft stationed in Daman on surveillance to assess the situation. The "BS Negi" and "Ocean Diamond" which were in the vicinity rendered assistance. The OSV "Great Ahalya" responded to the call to evacuate the personnel. Out of the total 33 crew members, 28 were evacuated by the ship. Five crew members remained on board to manage the situation. The Coast Guard vessel "Achook" on patrol was also diverted to render assistance. In addition, the "Sankalp" and "Samudra Prahari" equipped with major fire-fighting as well as pollution control equipment, were also dispatched. A naval helicopter was dispatched to provide support and assist in the evacuation. The fire on board was brought under control around 7:30 p.m. and the ship was being safely towed by the "Malviya 24" to Mumbai.
