Ship in distress of Kyle
On Nov 19, 2021, the 'Wilson Alicante', en route from Neskaupstadur to Kyleakin, first ran aground under the Skye Bridge, then floated off again and then began drifting broadside in the shipping channel towards the Skye Bridge in Kyle and nearby rocks. The lifeboat of the local RNLI station and the Portree lifeboat were paged at 3:24 p.m., when the UK Coastguard declared a ‘Pan Pan’ situation. The Coastguard tried to contact the vessel via VHF radio but were receiving no response. The Kyle lifeboat arrived on scene within two minutes of launching and found the vessel broadside under the bridge drifting towards the rocks. The lifeboat crew tried to make contact with the crew, but did not get a response too. However, the vessel managed to restore propulsion and make its way towards the nearby pier of the Kyleakin Fish plant. The Kyle lifeboat escorted the vessel on its way the pier to ensure it made it safely, and once it was alongside and secured, the Portree lifeboat, which still underway, was stood down. The UK Coastguard requested that Kyle lifeboat stayed on scene until local Coastguard units had arrived which was shortly after 6:30 p.m. Report with photos: https://rnli.org/news-and-media/2021/november/20/kyle-rnli-called-to-cargo-ship-that-ran-aground-and-was-adrift-under-skye-bridge
