Drifting bulker caused havoc in Gladstone
The "Ulusoy 12" caused havoc on the Gladstone Harbour as it brought Curtis Island ferry services to a standstill on Sep 10, 2014. After breaking off its mooring lines at Barney Point Coal Terminal, the coal carrier began pivoting in the water at almost 180 degrees. The bulkcarrier had almost finished loading at Barney Point Coal Terminal when the vessel's mooring lines parted and the vessel drifted away from the berth and into the shipping channel. The vessel touched bottom, dropped anchor and did not continue to drift further into the shipping channel. Three marine pilots and five tugs were sent out at 5.10 a.m. to assist the vessel. No injuries or environmental damage were caused. Early morning commuters on their way to Curtis Island via ferry were impacted only minimally. Two of the early morning ferries experienced some delay. Passengers were sent from the wharf back to the ferry terminal as a precautionary measure. The employees were transported across to Curtis Island about 6.05 a.m. when the ferries returned to normal operations.
