Fishing vessel disabled off Egmond aan Zee

Fri Sep 08 09:16:51 CEST 2017 Timsen

The north-going "Ondermeming - UK179" suffered an failure of both main and auxiliary engine off Egmond aan Zee on Sep 7, 2017. After a brief inspection, it was found that no fuel was being pumped from the daytank to the engines. The fishing vessel reported the problems via VHF channel 16 to the Dutch Coast Guard which alerted the crew of the KNRM station Egmond around midday. They were requested to bring fuel to the unfortunate fisherman. The lifeboat was alongside half an hour after the alarm. A swell of two meters made the transfer of two crew members and the fuel complicated. The "Onderneming" had lost propulsion and was drifting with the weather and the wind towards the coast. The master decided to establish a towing connection to keep the ship in the waves and to pull it to safer waters. Due to the rough seas the towing wire broke several times. In the meanwhile, both engines could be restarted and the vessel regained propulsion. As more fuel was needed to safely reach the port of IJmuiden. A shoreline crew and the crew of the coastal aid vehicle (KHV) were on standby at the beach of Castricum for some time. The lifeboat disconnected the towing connection and returned to the beach to pick up more fuel amd then returned to the unfortunate fisherman. After the fuel was delivered, the lifeboat took its two crew members back on board and returned to the station.
