Medevac off Mouill Pt. Lighthouse

On Ocz 7, 2014, at 9.40 p.m. the NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew was activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority to respond to rendezvous with the "BW Prince" to evacuate a 39 year old Filipino crewman suffering 3rd degree burns to his left leg and needing to be taken to a hospital. The NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched the "Spirit of Vodacom" accompanied by two WC Government Health EMS rescue paramedics and rendezvoused with the ship approximately 12 nautical miles off-shore of the Mouille Point Lighthouse. On arrival on-scene an EMS rescue paramedic and an NSRI crewman were transferred aboard the ship and the patient, found to be in a serious but stable condition, was transferred onto the sea rescue craft and brought to shore and an EMS ambulance has transported the patient, in a stable condition, to hospital for further treatment. It appeared that the sailor had been burnt accidentally by boiling water that splashed on his thigh and on his leg on Oct 4, and the ship, sailing from Nigeria to Singapore, had diverted to the nearest port, which was Cape Town, while ships medics treated the patient onboard with additional medical advice from land based doctors.
