Search for fourth tugman going on

Wed Sep 02 12:32:05 CEST 2020 Timsen

After the sinking of the 'Sir Gaëtan-Duval' near Poudre-d'Or one crew member was still missing as of Sep 2. Confirmed were the death of Kumar Seewoo, 53, from Montagne-Longue, and the skipper Jimmy Adisson. Whether the third body, which was recovered in the afternoon of Sep 1 at Grande-Gaube, was Linsday Plassan or Mosadeck Bheenick, was still unclear. The search for the fourth tugman was going on. The unloaded 23,6-m-barge ‘L’Ami Constant‘ was meanwhile secured near the Poudre d'Or lagoon. She was to be taken back to Port-Louis the coming days. Tug towing barge with Wakashio residues sank - three dead, two missing

Tue Sep 01 09:56:10 CEST 2020 Timsen

The ''Sir Gaëtan-Duval' sank off Poudre d´Or at the northeast coast of Mauritius in the evening of Aug 31, 2020, at 7.40 p.m. The tug was caught in stormy water with 3,5 meters swell when the barge ’Ami Constant’, owned by the Mauritian maritime services company Taylor Smith, which she was towing, suddenly crashed into the stern and shattered part of the hull. Four crew members escaped in a lifeboat and reached the shore. They were transported to the SSR hospital in Pamplemousses where they are receiving first aid. The other were initially reported missing. Jimmy Adisson, the 60-year-old skipper and Sujit Kumar Seewoo, a 53-year-old engineer, have since been recovered dead. All night long, rescuers searched the area. A third body was found in the morning of Sep 1. The search was suspended at 5:30 a.m. and resumed with new teams at 6:00 a.m. The police helicopter Dhruv and a Dornier aircraft also assisted in the rescue operations. The Mauritius Port Authority has also dispatched a second tug, the 'Sir Edouard', and the National Coast Guard was also put on alert. Three other ships joined the search, the 'Boka Expedition', the CGS 'Barracuda' and the 'Standford Hawk'. Local fishermen and their boats were also assisting. The 'Sir Gaëtan' had been called to tow a barge which had been used for storage of oil residues from the cleaning of the stern part of the 'Wakashio' off Pointe d’Esny, but was empty at the time of the accident. The barge was returning from Pointe-d'Esny to Port-Louis when the shipwreck occurred 30 miles from the grounding site. She was meanwhile secured in the shelter of a nearby bay.
