NGO yacht rescued 93 migrants

Thu Nov 07 10:52:31 CET 2024 Timsen

The NGO ship 'Sea Eye 5' has rescued 110 people from distress in a series of missions between Nov 5 and 6t off the island of Lampedusa. The missions were characterized by challenges and a long struggle to coordinate the rescue measures with the Maltese and Italian authorities. The organization Alarmphone reported an emergency in the Maltese rescue zone on the morning of Nov 5. A boat with 54 people was discovered t at 10:56 a.m. The 'Sea Eye 5' was in close contact with the Maltese authorities. Despite difficult negotiations and a steady deterioration of the situation, the ship had to intervene after around five hours and evacuated the people because the boat was no longer seaworthy and water was entering. During the course of the day, further reports of maritime emergencies were received, prompting the'Sea Eye 5' to continue its search operations. The 'Trotamar III' discovered another boat with 93 people on board, and stabilized the situation for the time being. The Italian Coast Guard then requested the 'Sea Eye 5Ä to provide assistance. On the way to the scene, the crew found another unseaworthy boat and rescued the 25 people on board. On the early morning of Nov 6, the 'Sea Eye 5' reached the 'Trotamar III' and embarked 31 more survivors ,after the 'Trotamar III' had reached its capacity limit. The Italian Coast Guard finally instructed the 'sea Eye 5' to hand over the 31 survivors from the last rescue to a Coastguard ship off Lampedusa and to take the remaining rescued people to the port of Ortona. However, the 'Sea Eye 5' could not reach this port for technical reasons. Operations manager Gorden Isler of Sea-Eye e.V. appealed to the authorities to assign a closer port, as the ship is not suitable for sea voyages lasting several days. Both ships were still heading for Lampedusa in order to enable the survivors to receive care as soon as possible. They urgently needed medical examinations.

Hundreds of migrants rescued in the Mediterranean

Tue Jul 23 11:05:33 CEST 2024 Timsen

The 'Geo Barents' and 'Aurora' have assisted 297 migrants during the weekend of July 19-21 in the Mediterranean, while the Italian Coastguard rescued 126 people off the coast of Lampedusa. Like every summer, departures from African coasts to European shores are increasing. Initially, the 'Geo Barents' provided assistance to 226 people during three operations. During the first, which occurred on the morning of July 19 off the coast of Libya, 49 migrants, including nine children and 16 women, who were in distress on an overcrowded inflatable boat, were rescued. On the afternoon, the crew rescued 130 other people in difficulty in a boat near the Tunisian coast. On the morning of July 20, 47 migrants were taken care of in international waters by the 'Geo Barents'. The Italian authorities have assigned the port of Livorno to the humanitarian ship, which was almost 1,100 km from the first rescue site. On the evening of July 20, the 'Aurora' rescued 71 people in collaboration with the sailboat 'Trotamar 3', which, in addition to this joint operation, supported 50 additional migrants. They were all landed in Lampedusa on July 21. The humanitarian ships were supported by the Italian Coastguard. The latter provided assistance to 126 exiles aboard three boats that had left Tunisia. Among the shipwrecked, originally from Ivory Coast and Guinea, were 18 women and as many children. They too were dropped off at the port of Lampedusa. Furthermore, the 'Ocean Viking' disembarked 55 migrants on July 20 in Naples, who were rescued two days earlier in the MalteseSAR zone.

Yacht rescued 52 migrants

Mon Jun 24 10:50:19 CEST 2024 Timsen

On June 21, 2024, the crew of the "Trotamar II" prevented an illegal pull back by the so-called Libyan Coastguard and was able to rescue 52 people from distress at sea. The refugees had previously set off in an inflatable boat from Zuwara. Since 7 a.m. there was no response to the emergency call apart from the "Trotamar III" after sighting the unseaworthy inflatable boat. The sailing yacht has been cruising the route between the Italian island of Lampedusa and North Africa since August 2023. The Compass Collective is searching the region for maritime emergencies. The crew had no choice but to take the people directly onto the yacht, where they were being provided with water, tea, warm food and emergency blankets. Fuel burns, caused by a fuel-saltwater mixture, were also being treated on board. The "Trotamar III" and the 52 rescued people were now waiting for the urgently needed assignment of a safe port.
