Dredger owned by Mercator sinks near Mangalore port

Thu Sep 05 10:12:05 CEST 2019 arnekiel

Tridevi Prem, a dredger owned by Mercator Ltd, sank near New Mangalore Port at around 1 am on September 3. Earlier, the master of the vessel had reported flooding in the pump room. AV Ramana, Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said here on Tuesday that the dredger is not blocking the navigational channel, and there is no problem for the movement of vessels at the port. The dredger was placed 2.5 nautical miles away from the port.

Dredger abandoned after water ingress

Tue Sep 03 09:35:45 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Tridevi Prem" with a crew of 20 on board suffered water ingress in the night of Sep 1, 2019, off Mangalore port. The Indian Coast Guard deployed the patrol boat "Amritya" which rescued 13 crew members. The other seven were rescued by a tug of New Mangalore Port. The "Tridevi Prem" finally capsized about two miles from the shore off New Mangalore Port on Sep 3. The dredger had been anchored in the port limits for deepening the channel. In the evening of Sep 1 the crew reported flooding inside the pump room. A repair team of seven people, including divers, were taken out to the ship, but the crew did not allow them to start repairs and switched off the lights. On Sep 2 at 2.30 a.m. they abandoned ship in a lifeboat, leaving behind the repair team. The 13 men were rescued by the "Amartya" in severe weather conditions and heavy rain. An NMPT tug in coordination with the ICGS later rescued also the repair team. Then pollution response equipment was mobilized along with a barge, but the attempt to drain the fuel oil failed due to the inclement weather. Two layers of oil booms were laid out around the wreck which did not the navigation.
