Treasure took damaged destroyer back to Yokosuka Naval Base

Thu Dec 14 11:26:21 CET 2017 Timsen

The "USS John S. McCain" has returned to the Yokosuka Naval Base on deck of the "Treasure" for repairs of damage suffered in its collision near Singapore on Aug 21, killing ten sailors and injuring five east of the Straits of Malacca. The ship will undergo extensive maintenance at the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center. Repair efforts started immediately once the ship was dockside. The destroyer was towed to the pier at Yokosuka Naval Base on Dec. 13. It had sailed under its own power to the Changi Naval Base, Singapore, where crew members, technicians and divers recovered remains, assessed damage and prepared the ship for travel by patching sections of the hull and performing maintenance on key systems. The ship left Singapore on Oct 5 aboard the "Treasure" heading for Yokosuka, but diverted to Subic Bay, Philippines, after a new crack was discovered on its starboard side. At Subic Bay, extra support was added to the stricken vessel aboard the "Treasure", which departed for Yokosuka on Nov 28. It finally arrived at Tokyo Bay on Dec 5, but couldn’t dock at nearby Yokosuka until the crew prepared it for a safe offload. Transport of damaged destroyer resumed

Tue Nov 28 21:41:26 CET 2017 Timsen

The damaged destroyer USS "John S. McCain (DDG- 56)" resumed its voyage aboard the "Treasure" to Yokosuka on Nov 28 after being diverted to Subic Bay last month. She had been damaged in a collision on Aug. 21 near Singapore. After sitting pierside in Singapore’s Changi Naval Base for seven weeks, while crew members and divers patched up holes and put key ship systems in layup maintenance status ahead of the voyage, the destroyer was loaded onto the "Treasure" on Oct. 5. On Oct. 22, though, bad weather and a new crack in McCain’s hull forced the "Treasure" to divert to Subic Bay, Philippines. While at anchor in Subic Bay, technicians inspected the cracks and determined the ship needed additional blocks under it to support and distribute its weight on the heavy lift vessel. The USS "McCain" will now continue to Fleet Activities Yokosuka, where the destroyer will be repaired after the "Alnic MC" ripped open the port side of the ship and caused flooding in berthing and mechanical spaces. The work will be completed at the Ship Repair Facility-Japan Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC), and the USS "McCain" was expected to then resume its work as a Forward Deployed Naval Force ship operating out of Yokosuka. SRF was making preparations to begin remediation and repair efforts immediately once the ship is dockside. The work was expected to cost about $223 million and take about a year to complete.
