MOL-operated Bulker Tohmisan Maru Receives AFRAS AMVER Award -Commended for Rescue of Shipwrecked Seafarers off Guam
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its operated bulker Tohmisan Maru received the AFRAS AMBER Award at the AFRAS Annual Awards Ceremony for 2015 held in Washington D.C. on September 9. The AFRAS AMVER Award is presented by the Association for Rescue at Sea, Inc. (AFRAS), an organization made up of retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy. The award honors the merchant vessel that made the most remarkable rescue effort during the previous year. The Tohmisan Maru (called the C.S. Sunshine at the time) rescued 24 Chinese seafarers whose cargo ship was taking on water 700km west of Guam on January 20, 2014. Source: MOL
MOL Bulker C.S. Sunshine Rescues 24 Seafarers from Disabled Freighter West of Guam
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. on Jan 29 announced that its operated coal carrier C. S. Sunshine, while steaming some 700km west of Guam on January 20, rescued all 24 Chinese crewmembers of a disabled freighter. The rescue details are as follows: At 8:15 on January 20 (all times are local), the C.S. Sunshine, which departed Newcastle, Australia, bound for Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, received a distress signal from a Panama-flagged freighter that had lost power. The C.S. Sunshine immediately altered course and made for the distressed vessel at all possible speed. 15:40 on January 20, 24 Chinese crewmembers were successfully rescued. 10:45 on January 22, all rescued crewmembers were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard.
