Sediments in Volga Caspain Sea Canal caused grounding

Sat Apr 04 09:57:55 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Teymur Ehmedov", being loaded with 3000 tons wheat bound from Asthrakan to Baku and with 11 tons fuel on board ran aground on the the Volga-Caspian Sea Canal on Mar 31 at canal km 138.5 km. The ship was damaged and needed tug assistance to be refloated. The survey ship "Peter Bokan" was sent for soundings of the bottom between km 138 and 140 and found a decrease in depth at km 138,5 where the bow of the "Teymur Ehmedov" was resting on underwater obstacles. The port captain of Olya stopped ship traffic in the area on April 1 and planned to make a diving inspection of the site. They found the depth to be less than 2,4 m as a result of storms with Eastern winds in the northern Caspian Sea from Mar 27 to 30 which had built up sand and sediment.
