Cargo ship detained after collision
The local authorities in Surabaya detained the "Tay Son 4" and its crew of 22 as part of an ongoing investigation into the collision between the ship and the "Mulya Sejati". A team of marine inspectors at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya was deployed on Nov 21 to conduct an inspection of the vessel. The team boarded the ship to check its seaworthiness in accordance with the standard operating procedures of international shipping. The investigation would also determine the legal status of the captain as well as the ship. The police had not yet taken any legal action against the captain as the full authority for accidents at sea lay with the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). A number of family members of the victims went to Koesma Tuban Regional Hospital on Nov 21 to identify the three bodies found at the scene of the accident. However, none of the victims could be identified as a result of the damage to the bodies. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Muhamamd Arifin was intensifying the search for the missing crew members. Basarnas has deployed a ship and helicopter in the search area which was up to 20 nautical miles from the point of collision.
