Ferry abandoned in port after list
The "Swarna Bahtera" heeled to portside at the berth of Nusatara Parepare port on Feb 28, 2016, and almost capsized due to cargo shift and strong winds. The ship, carrying hundreds of passengers, tilted after being overloaded. Some trucks carrying agricultural products, hit the port side and increased the list to 25-30 degrees. Passengers were panicking and abandoned the ferry to the shore. All were evacuated successfully and accounted for. A harbour tug was called to assist the ferry which was preparing to leave to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, when she started listing. The voyage was canceled, and the authorities are constantly monitoring the condition of the ferry which regained stability after reducing the list.
