Bulgarian Ship owner Charged over Cocaine Bust

Sun Aug 19 07:33:54 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Doychin Doychev, who owns the Bulgarian-flagged Saint Nikolay, raided by Spanish authorities on Monday, was charged with "participation in an organised crime group," prosecutors from the specialist organised crime office said. Twenty-one Bulgarian sailors were arrested after the ship was boarded by the coast guard and the officers found three tons of high-purity cocaine onboard. The raid took place some 80 kilometres (50 miles) off Cadiz. Doychev has been put in custody for seventy-two hours. The police also said that they planned to bring charges against Ruslan Kolev, the suspected chief organiser of the drug-smuggling operation, who was arrested in Sofia together with another man. Kolev may face charges for having organized the transportation of the cocaine load from South America to Europe. He has been in custody since August 15th. "Doychev must have had information about the cargo onboard his vessel,? Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said. No charges against the Bulgarian sailors have been brought up so far. http://paper.standartnews.com/en/article.php?d=2012-08-19&article=39833

Sailors to remain in custody

Sat Aug 18 09:02:20 CEST 2012 arnekiel

The 21 Bulgarian sailors who were apprehended in Spain on Tuesday after a Bulgarian ship carrying 3 tons of cocaine was captured are to remain in custody, a Spanish court has ruled. The Bulgarians were among the 31 people nabbed by Spanish authorities after the massive cocaine cargo brought from South America on the Sv. Nikolay ship were seized. On Friday, Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov discussed the case over the phone with his Spanish counterpart Jorge Fernandez Diaz. Diaz and Tsvetanov are expected to meet in Madrid next Thursday. Earlier on Friday, Tsvetanov told local media that it would be made clear after that meeting whether the trial against the 21 Bulgarian sailors would be held in Bulgaria or in Spain. The Bulgarian Interior Minister did not rule out the possibility that some of the sailors were innocent.
