At least 19 injured in ferry crash in Sydney

Tue Oct 11 10:45:57 CEST 2016 Timsen

At least 19 passengers of the "Supercat 4" were injured after the ferry crashed into the Circular Quay Wharf in Sydney on Oct 11, 2016, at 4.20 p.m. It was the 3.45 p.m. Watsons Bay to Circular Quay service. The vessel, which was travelling from Rose Bay via Garden Island to Circular Quay, failed to slow down after the reverse thrust failed and hit a wooden backboard on one of the piers. The impact caused passengers to fall over after the ship came into the wharf too fast and hit the front pontoon. At least one person suffered spinal injuries after he was thrown on the upper deck. He was thrown to the ground, striking his back on the bulk head. A police rescue team was called in to bring the injured man down from the top deck, while six patients were taken to St Vincent's Hospital for further treatment. Paramedics treated 19 passengers from the Wharf 5 scene, with most suffering only minor injuries. One woman who suffered leg and arm injuries was taken away on a stretcher, but all the other patients were assisted and taken to Sydney Hospital sitting in ambulances. The majority of passengers on board the ferry were tourists. Transport for NSW has referred the accident to the Office of Transport Safety Investigations, with officers currently quarantining the vessel as investigations get under way in the evening. The 5.45 p.m. Mosman to Taronga service and the returning 6.01 p.m. Taronga to Mosman service were cancelled as a result of the accident.
