Sunshine Coast police say there are no suspicious circumstances in the disappearance of a Korean crewman of the "Ocean Caesar", who is believed to have drowned. Water police and Sunshine Coast property squad detectives boarded the fully loaded coal carrier "Ocean Caesar" about 7.30am Apr 11, 2011, after it was ordered to berth at the pilot boarding ground, eight kilometers off the Kawana coast. The master of the Ocean Caesar is believed to have fallen off the bulk carrier about 180 km north-east of Bundaberg about 3 p.m. on Apr 9. Search teams spent more than 36 hours scouring the water. The search was called off after advice it was not possible for the man to have survived. The ship had departed from Hay Point on Mar 13 bound for South Africa with load of coal. Police have ruled out foul play in relation to the disappearance after interviewing the crew of 21 for six hours with the help of translators. The "Ocean Caesar" left the pilot boarding ground about 1.30 p.m. on Apr 11 and resumed its voyage.

THE search for a Korean sailor who is believed to have fallen overboard from a cargo ship was called off overnight. The 62-year-old master of the Ocean Caesar was reported missing about 4pm on Saturday and planes have been searching for him since. An Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman said the search was called off after advice it was not possible for the man to have survived this long. The spokeswoman said the vessel had been asked to divert to Mooloolaba, where Queensland Police will board the craft and conduct enquiries. The vessel is expected to arrive in Mooloolaba this morning. Seach teams spent more than 36 hours scouring the water for the man believed to have fallen off the bulk carrier about 180km north-east of Bundaberg.

Seven fixed-wing aircraft are searching for a 62-year-old Korean national who was reported missing from cargo ship OCEAN CAESAR yesterday afternoon. An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spokeswoman told in a press conference they received a call about 4pm yesterday afternoon that the captain had gone missing from the vessel, the Ocean Caesar, when the vessel was at 40 nautical miles north to north-east of the tip of Fraser Island. The spokeswoman said the search was being conducted over a 220 square mile radius, going as far north as 40 nautical miles north-east of Sandy Cape. “At this stage, there have been no sightings,” she said. The Ocean Caesar was heading to South Africa from Hay Point carrying general cargo. The captain of the Panama registered vessel was first noticed as missing by the crew about 4pm yesterday. They cannot remember seeing him since 2pm yesterday. Searchers are still scouring the area and the rescue helicopter is on standby.
