Fire on tanker spread to "Success Satria 1"

Tue Sep 03 10:27:16 CEST 2013 Timsen

In the morning of Aug 31, 2013, the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received an emergency call regarding a fire on the "Success Satria 1" and the Kiribati-flagged tanker "Kit 57", 322 gt (IMO-No.: 8032217), off Pulau Lima at about 11.40 a.m. MMEA forces rushed to the scene, which was located one nautical mile south of Pulau Mungging, and managed to rescue one crew member. Four other crew members were rescued by a Royal Customs boat which was in the vicinity. Two of the men who suffered cuts and a suspected broken leg, were sent to the Kota Tinggi Hospital for treatment. The fire had started in the main engine room of the "Kit 57" before spreading to the "Success Satria 1". There was nobody on the Singapore-flagged tanker at the time of the fire, making it easier for the fire to spread to the second tanker which was moored alongside. The "Kit 57"'s 18 Myanmarese crew were onboard the "Success Satria 1" at that time. The fire was believed to have started from a short circuit in the engine room, spread to their ship. The "Kit 57" sank seven hours after it caught fire, and wreck marker buoys have been laid out. The port authorities were investigating to determine if there was any breach in procedures or illegal activities such as ship-to-ship transfers. The tankers were moored together and believed to be ferrying fuel. They were anchored at a legal anchoring spot near Pulau Mungging, off the coast of Johor. The Department of Environment monitored the scene to make sure there was no oil spill. Johor Environment Department officers who were dispatched to the scene have not found any traces of oil spill at the site.
