Scandinavian Star commission aboard gutted ferry
On Nov 22 four representants of the "Scandinavian Star"-commission boarded the "Strand" in Bømlo for an inspection. The commission was founded by the parliament on May 12, 2016, for fire inquiries as a consequence of the fire on the car ferry "Scandinavian Star" in 1990 with 159 dead. It shall submit a report to Parliament's Presidency in June 2017. In Bømlo they talked to the fire chief Ove Halleraker and representatives of Los Marine and were surveying the burnt ferry. A report was to be published in 2017. Norwegian report with photo: http://www.bomlo-nytt.no/20161122/scandinavian-star-kommisjonen-gar-om-bord-pa-mf-strand-i-dag
Ferry beyond repair after devastating fire
The "Strand" was supposed to be beyond repair and would not return on the Ranavik-Happens Holmane route after the fire aboard the ferry in drydock of the LOS Marine in Rubbestadneset on Bømlo had raged for 20 hours and caused enormous devastation. The extreme temperatures and the many rooms inside the ferry were why the fire raged for such a long time. Everything was completely burned out and the rooms inside were blacked out in entirety. In the hallways most of the roof and walls have collapsed. Only the engine room remained unaffected. The overheating of the metal allowed the fire to move through almost the entire ship on Oct 29. One of the 40 firefighter which had been deployed had suffered from smoke inhalation, and 423 people had to be evacuated in the foremidday due to massive smoke development. A total of 1,300 people had received an SMS alert to evacuate from the Rubbestadnes parish. Norwegian report with photos: https://www.nrk.no/hordaland/slik-ser-det-ut-etter-fergebrannen-1.13215832
Damaged ferry may have to be scrapped
Welding works may have caused the fire aboard the "Strand" in dry dock of LOS Marines in Rubberstadneset. The forensic investigation were expected to start on Oct 31 after the wreck cooled down enough. The operator Norled did not rule out that the heavily damaged ship may have to be scrapped if the costs of the repairs exceeded those of a newbuilding. Until further notice the "Gloppen" (IMO: 8304775) remained operating on the route Ranavik-Skjersholmane. The "Strand" had been scheduled to return to service this week after the annual maintenance.
