Ferry sheltered off Antrim in storm Darragh

Mon Dec 09 13:29:16 CET 2024 Timsen

Passengers aboard the 'Stena Superfast VII' have been stuck on a ferry for over 12 hours off the coast of Northern Ireland after departing on Dec 6, 2024, amid Storm Darragh. The ship which left Cairnryan port in Dumfries and Galloway at 1 a.m. has been forced to take shelter on the Antrim coast until conditions had improved. Coming into Belfast Lough, the ship turned, and the captain announced it was too unsafe to come into Belfast. The ship only berthed in Belfast once conditions had improved and it was deemed safe to do so with a delay of 13 hours.

The Bangor CRT and NIAS were tasked to the 'Stena Superfast VII', en route to Belfast, for a medical emergency on board. A passenger had a suspected cardiac arrest in pos. 54 45 21 N, 005 37 37 W, around 2,5 nautical miles off Blackhead Light House, Belfast Lough, on May 27, 2023, at 3.55 p.m. UTC. The ferry turned around to Belfast, and the Bangor CRT took the patient off, who was transferred to an ambulance. The SAROPS was terminated at 5.10 p.m.

Fire in engine room

Mon Jul 12 23:59:56 CEST 2021 Timsen

A fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Stena Superfast VII' during the crossing from Cairnryan to Belfast on July 12, 2021 around 9 p.m. Lifeboats from Bangor, Donaghadee and Larne were tasked to deal with the incident. Coastguard rescue teams from Bangor, Portaferry, Larne and Portmuck also attended. The vessel was due to arrive in Belfast at about 9.45 p.m. It arrived with the coastguard and tugs standing by at 10.15 p.m. Passengers safely disembarked the ferry. They had been advised to congregate in designated areas after the alarm was raised, when the ferry was in Belfast Lough.
