Ferry assisted in rescue of castaway
While transiting the Piombino Channel, the officers on board the 'Stelio Montomoli' noticed a dinghy that kept turning, describing small circles and, not far away, a man in the water on June 14, 2020. The alarm was raised immediately. The ferry stopped, approached the castaway, and a life buoy was launched. In the meantime, the Coast Guard had been notified, and a patrol boat left Portoferraio and another from Piombino which reached the area first. It rescued the castaway, a 40-year-old man from Fiesole. He had left in the morning from the port of Terre Rosse in Piombino with his dinghy to reach the island of Elba for a fishing trip. Upon the return in the early afternoon, the console was damaged. The rudder got stuck and the man was thrown out of the boat. Though being a good swimmer, he was unable to get back on board the boat.
