Cargo ship saved distressed yachtie
The "Lydia Cafiero" rescued the distressed Japaneses yacht skipper Jyunichi Hamaguchi in the morning of Jan 27, 2016. The boat was drifting 400 nautical miles south of Punta Arenas and had suffered water ingress. The SAR operation also involved the patrol boat "Marinero Fuentealba", two aircraft and one helicopter. An emergency signal was received in the morning of Jan 26 at the MRCC of the Chilean Navy in Punta Arenas, which coordinated the SAR operation. At 10 a.m., the "Marinero Fuentealba" and a Dauphin helicopter of the navy were dispatched to the yacht which was located at 1.30 p.m. amid poor visibility and waves of three meters. The "Lydia Cafeiro" which was next to the position diverted towards the sinking boat. Hours later, another aircraft took off in Valparaiso to support the operation and reached the area at mignight. It found the Japanese still on board and dropped off an emergency raft. On Jan 27 at 01:30 a.m. the crew of the "Lydia Cafiero" was able to recover Hamaguchi and redezvoused with the "Marinero Fuentealba" at 06:30 a.m. The Japanese seasoned was transferred to Chilean ship by helicopter operation and departure of rescue swimmers. The castaway was in good health. He was hoisted aboard the helicopter and expected to arrive in Punta Arenas at 4.30 p.m. where he would be be received by the Maritime Authority.
